Preamble (Script)

The Preamble must be read on each net, at approximately 5 to 10 minutes prior to the official start time of the net. While the general content of the preamble is set, delivery can be left up to the style of the NCS. An example of the Preamble is below, and should be closely followed, allowing for style and delivery of the NCS.

Welcome to the OM International Sideband Society net. This is <insert callsign>, my name is <insert first name> and my OMISS number is <insert OMISS number>. I will be acting as Net Control for this session.

The objectives of this net are to work for OMISS awards, pass traffic and promote good will among amateur operators. The net is run by the Net Control Station and all calls must go through Net Control or a designated relay.

The designated relays for this evening are <insert callsigns of the relays>. If another station hears something net control or the designated relays do not hear please say “Relay” on the air and identify with your callsign, then wait for Net Control or a designated relay to acknowledge you. Please do not jump in without being recognized.

Some NCS stations will call for a relay to check for emergency or priority traffic, other will just ask if there is a relay to any traffic. This is up to the NCS, while following good operating practice.

At this time, we will break the net for emergency or priority traffic. Is there any emergency or priority traffic?

More commonly seen on higher traffic nets, like 40m, it is good practice to give membership a check to speak up here with any announcements. If the net is experiencing poor prop or difficult conditions this request may be left out, at the discretion of the NCS.

Is there any traffic, general announcements or net business of general interest to be announced?

During the net the minimum acceptable signal report is a 21 and the maximum is a 59. Net control or a relay must hear both stations acknowledge the correct signal report for the contact to be official.

All stations must identify with their full callsign when making or receiving a call.

All net times are in Zulu and the current time is <insert time from netlogger> Zulu.

The following section may be skipped if there are no newcomers on the worklist. If there are newcomers this section should be read, welcoming them to our net. It is optional if the callsigns of those new members is read in the below, because sometimes it can confuse them into thinking they are getting a call.

As a reminder to all stations you can receive a call at any time, but you must wait your turn to make a call.

The next section is a call to members to identify if they are looking for their 49th or 50th state for the OMISS Worked all States (WAS) or Statehood awards. Members are usually given a priority call, meaning they can skip to the head of the line, if a station joins that would give them their 49th or 50th. If prop or conditions are poor, it’s acceptable to ask stations to identify on AIM as well.

For those of you looking for your 49th or 50th state for OMISS Worked All States or Statehood awards you will be given priority should those states check-in. If anyone is looking for their 49th or 50th states, please call now (or posted the request on AIM).

Finally, to close the preamble, we announce procedure for mobile and combo stations. Some Net Controllers will look at their worklist and call out if they have either of these two groups on the list during this section of the preamble.

When working a mobile station, please include both signal reports and the mobile stations location on your QSL card.

Contacts made with a combo station count as only one call.
